Dear Wonders families,
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! We have had a busy summer preparing for the start of the new year and we look forward to working with each of you and welcoming your children to our classrooms and programs.
Each year the administrative team identifies a goal to help guide and inform our work. We do this by reviewing feedback that we receive from the annual parent and staff surveys and reflecting on our hopes for the year. We value the voices of our community and appreciate the reflections shared. Our conversations this summer led us back to the importance of the Wonders mission which is to create and advance high quality, diverse educational communities that teach children the foundations of life-long learning and social responsibility.
Our goal for the year is to ensure that all of our classrooms are supporting our diverse educational communities through Anti-bias Education teaching practices.
Wonders has always been committed to anti-bias education as a means to teach children, as stated by NAEYC, “the basic principle that all people deserve the opportunities and resources to fulfill their complete humanity”. It is not enough to teach children about similarities and differences, we must also teach them the skills to actively advocate and work for justice for all. Wonders teachers will be incorporating the four goals of anti-bias education into their curriculum planning:
- ABE Goal 1 Each child will demonstrate self-awareness, confidence, family pride, and positive social identities.
- ABE Goal 2 Each child will express comfort and joy with human diversity; accurate language for human differences; and deep, caring human connections.
- ABE Goal 3 Each child will increasingly recognize unfairness, have language to describe unfairness, and understand that unfairness hurts.
- ABE Goal 4 Each child will demonstrate empowerment and the skills to act, with others or alone, against prejudice and/or discriminatory actions.
The Wonders staff development week kicked off our focused training on anti-bias education and we will continue to integrate this in our training throughout the year. Additionally, we will be sharing articles and ideas at team meetings and planning sessions. We welcome families to join us in this work and we will periodically provide links to helpful resources and articles. Here are two websites that are useful resources:
We invite you to join us as we learn more about the skills we need and the resources we currently possess to intentionally integrate our mission as we teach children to fulfill their complete humanity.
