Serving the Somerset and Wood Acres Elementary School Community

Wonders Extended Day at Little Falls opened in 2013 to serve the Wood Acres Elementary School community. Our Little Falls Program now serves Somerset Elementary School as well. Transportation from Wood Acres and Somerset is provided to and from our program at nearby St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church. Wonders offers flexible enrollment options and provides before care starting at 7:00 am and after school care until 6:30 pm Monday through Friday for children in Kindergarten through Grade 5. We offer full day programs when school is closed and half day programs on early dismissal days. Wonders at Little Falls is a warm, friendly community of teachers and children who explore nature along the Capital Crescent Trail, run and play on the playground, have time to tackle some homework, use our imaginations and have a healthy snack every afternoon.

An activity bus runs from Somerset and Wood Acres to Little Falls, Monday through Wednesday. The Wonders’ shuttle bus picks children up after their after school activities.

Wonders at Little Falls Curriculum

The primary goal in our school age program is to create communities for children and their families that are fun, nurturing and enriching. Children are active learners. Wonders at Little Falls provides an environment where children can safely grow through self-guided and structured play. In addition to fostering imagination, play challenges children to expand social, emotional and intellectual tools. School age teachers carefully plan the program to balance homework with exercise and promote healthy eating habits.

Wonders’ after school program curriculum is built around the concepts of friendship and being a good sport. Activities are designed to create opportunities for all children to explore and experience in ways that are meaningful to them. Activities incorporate seven learning areas: language and literacy, mathematical thinking, scientific thinking, social studies, personal and social development, physical development and the arts. The afternoon is a blend of child initiated and teacher initiated activities including outdoor play, afternoon snack, group time, choice times, homework and reading time.

On days when schools have scheduled early dismissal or are closed, we provide a half or full day program. These longer days give us the opportunity to enhance our programming by planning special events, inviting specialists in to share their expertise or exploring the larger community on field trips.

Wonders believes in programming that offers an array of opportunities and resources to children and families. In addition to our engaging curriculum, a variety of valuable services are included in our monthly tuition, including:

  • bus service to and from Somerset and Wood Acres Elementary
  • field trips
  • full and half day programming when school is closed
  • intramural sports
  • clubs
  • supervised homework time
  • family fun events
  • parent workshops
  • consultation and support from Child Development Consultants, Inc.
  • daily healthy snacks

Our inclusive philosophy ensures that all enrolled children can participate in the activities that we offer.

Wonders at Little Falls Financial Assistance

Wonders proudly offers a financial assistance  program that annually provides approximately $300,000 in tuition assistance. The Wonders Financial Assistance Fund is fundamental to who we are as a nonprofit organization and our community.

Our programs are funded through tuition and fundraising activities. We recognize that families have many choices in early childhood and school age programming and that child care tuition and fees are a significant portion of a family budget. We ensure the strength of Wonders by prioritizing our goals for quality programming and mindful fiscal management. We are committed to making our programs accessible to qualified families through our Financial Assistance Program and we accept Child Care Subsidy Vouchers from various organizations including Maryland State Department of Education Subsidy Program, the GSA Army Fee Assistance Child Care Subsidy Program, the FEEA Child Care Subsidy Program and the Montgomery Working Parents Assistance Program.
