Children and scary news stories
I like to watch the morning news as I get ready for work, but I am surprised, ney, aghast, at how much is inappropriate for children or downright scary. How many times have I lunged to the TV to turn it off. These days, I line up a secondary show, usually a reliably safe animal documentary, and keep the remote handy to jump to the other station in a flash.
But even with such tactics, it is unavoidable; children hear it on TV, radio or they hear about it from their friends. So it is best to prepare your child. Here’s a video to help you help your child manage the emotions from exposure to scary news stories. Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, VP of Research and Education at Sesame Workshop, shares some insights with PBS’s The Parent Show on the issue of children and exposure to scary news.
